Writeableroot – make your Mac yours again! Since macOS Big Sur the root directory is stored on a signed system volume (SSV), which 'features a kernel mechanism that verifies the integrity of the system content at runtime, and rejects any data — code and non-code — that doesn't have a valid cryptographic signature from Apple'.
Before I start explaining on how we can change the root directory on Apache Server using MAMP, it's important to remember that although MAMP was originally designed for Apple MAC systems, there is also a Windows version. I will be explaining how we can change the root directory on Apache server on both cases.
- Mac OS X 10.13; the Clang compiler and toolchain installed using Xcode the NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit (available from the CUDA Download page) Note that CUDA 10.2 is the last release to support macOS and future releases of CUDA may not support macOS.
- Macintosh HD could be considered the root path, as Macintosh HD is the name (given my Mac OS X, you can change it) of the HDD Mac OS X resides on on new Macs. The folders in this root path are Library, Applications, Users and System and some others, that are hidden. Also have a look at the following links to learn more about Mac OS X.
The examples below are for the standard versions of MAMP (free) and not the PRO versions (you have to pay after the trial period has expired).
If you don't have MAMP yet you can get your free copy from http://www.mamp.info/en/.
MAMP on MAC (method 1)
- Open MAMP
- Select Preferences
- Select Apache
- You will be able to see the current location of your document root
- Click on the object next to the ‘Document Root:‘ text
- You will now have a new Finder window opened
- Select the new location for your document root and click on the ‘Select‘ button
- You have now setup the new document root location
- Select OK
- MAMP automatically stops and starts the Apache and MySQL servers
MAMP on MAC (method 2)
- Using Finder, select your HD device
- Go to Applications > MAMP > conf > apache
- Edit file httpd.conf
- Do a find on ‘DocumentRoot'
- Replace the current path of your DocumentRoot (e.g.: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs) by your new (e.g.: /WebServers).
- Do another find on ‘DocumentRoot' until you get to the line that says 'This should be changed to whatever you set DocumentRoot to.'
- Replace the path on DocumentRoot (e.g.: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs) by your new path (e.g.: /WebServers).
- Save the modified httpd.conf file
- Go to MAMP
- Select StopServers (if they are up and running)
- Once the Apache and MySQL servers are stopped, select Start Servers
MAMP on Windows (method 1)
In these instructions I will assume that you've installed MAMP on its default location (C:MAMP). If this is not the case, then you should replace ‘C:MAMP‘ in the instructions by your own MAMP location.
- Open MAMP
- Select Preferences
- Select Apache
- Click on ‘Select'
- Select where your new document root should be located
- Click on the ‘OK' button
- Click on the ‘OK' button
- MAMP automatically stops and starts the Apache and MySQL servers
MAMP on Windows (method 2)
- Using Windows Explorer, select drive C
- Go to C:MAMPconfapache
- Edit file httpd.conf
- Do a find on ‘DocumentRoot'
- Replace the current path of your DocumentRoot (e.g.: C:MAMPhtdocs) by your new path (e.g.: C:WebServers).
- Do another find on ‘DocumentRoot' until you get to the line that says 'This should be changed to whatever you set DocumentRoot to.'
- Replace the path on DocumentRoot (e.g.: C:MAMPhtdocs) by your new path (e.g.: C:WebServers).
- Save the modified httpd.conf file
- Go to MAMP
- Select Stop Servers (if they are up and running)
- Once the Apache and MySQL servers are stopped, select Start Servers

Mac Os Mojave
The user named root, or superuser, is a special user account in UNIX-like operating systems that has unrestricted read and write privileges to all areas of the file system in OS X 10.10 or earlier. However, in OS X 10.11 or later, the root user's write access to certain areas of the file system is restricted.

The root user is disabled by default. Although you can enable it, it's recommended that you avoid logging into a Mac as the root user, either locally or remotely. Instead, use the sudo
command-line tool to perform tasks that require root user privileges. You can restrict access to sudo
by adding users to the /private/etc/sudoers file.

WARNING: Use extreme caution if you log in as the root user. You can lose data, damage the system by moving or deleting critical files, or cause other problems that can only be solved by reinstalling macOS. If you log in as the root user, always log out after completing your task, log in as an administrator, then disable the root user.
